Mayor Fulop Announces Jersey City’s Youngest Business Administrator Earns Top National Honor among Local Governments Nationwide

Posted Wed, Jan 25, 2023, From Jersey City Mayor's Office
JERSEY CITY - Mayor Steven M. Fulop announced Jersey City’s Business Administrator, John Metro, is recognized as one of the nation’s top professionals in local government, attributed to his commitment to the community and outstanding work in public service. For the second consecutive year, Metro is being awarded a coveted spot as one of the Top 100 Local Government Influencers by the Engaging Local Government Leaders (ELGL), a competitive annual list highlighting the top echelon of employees at all levels of government.

“John is an extraordinary leader dedicated to the Jersey City community. His efforts have helped achieve the goals set forth from the start of my administration in improving fiscal responsibility and financial stability, even during the most troubling economic times due to the pandemic. These efforts ultimately help alleviate taxpayers’ burdens. We are fortunate to have him as part of our team, and I congratulate him on this honor,” said Mayor Fulop, who promoted John to Business Administrator in 2019.

The ELGL’s Top 100 List is based on an individual’s influence in their community and outside their community through professional associations, mentoring, speaking, and writing. Every person on the list must be nominated by a friend or peer.

After graduating from Saint Peter’s University, Metro was hired in 2013 by the City as an Analyst under the Business Administrator’s Office. He was then appointed as Budget Director, where he helped established the Department of Finance and became its Director in 2019. One year later, Metro became the youngest appointed Business Administrator in Jersey City’s history at the age of 31.

“I am honored to be among the top-tier talent of local government professionals who are also pushing innovation and challenging the status quo,” John Metro said of his award. “I have been able to use the ELGL platform as a think tank to develop data-driven government focuses that align with our unique and progressive efforts here in Jersey City.”

Metro has earned national attention and several accolades as the Business Administrator of Jersey City, including the National Award of Excellence in government finance by the Government Finance Officers Association in 2021 for Management through Economic Uncertainty. In addition to his role at City Hall, John is a sought-after writer and speaker among other public servants. His willingness to share his experiences and insights with others in the field is appreciated, especially by his peers.
