Hoboken Police Arrest Blotter Aug 10 – Aug 16

1. On August 10, 2023, at approximately 6:10 p.m., Police Officers Daniel Grossi and Joshua Campoverde responded to the 400 block of Washington Street, for reports of a man lying in front of a building and blocking its entry. Police Officer Nicholas Protopapadakis was already on scene and advised the other officers the man was laying inside the vestibule. Officers recognized the man as 44-year-old Angel Sanchez of Hoboken and asked him to step out of the vestibule. Sanchez was issued a summons for defiant trespassing. When he received the summons, Sanchez became irate, tore the summons up and threw it onto the ground, and then began to walk away from the officers while yelling threats at them. At one point he walked toward officers with his fists clenched, which is when they handcuffed Sanchez and transported him to Hoboken Police Headquarters. He was additionally charged with making terroristic threats and littering and remanded to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

2. On August 12, 2023, at approximately 9:55 a.m., Police Officers Daniel Grossi and Joshua Campoverde were driving on Washington Street near Second Street when they observed 46-year-old Raul Aponte of Union City, who they knew had an active warrant for his arrest. They approached him and conducted a search incident to arrest, which located a glass cylindrical pipe containing a brown residue, suspected to be CDS. He was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also processed on warrants for a theft that occurred on August 4, 2023, in which a package with contents valued at $65 was taken from the vestibule area of a residential building on the 100 block of Bloomfield Street, and for a theft on August 9, 2023, during which a package worth approximately $42 was stolen from outside the front door of a building on Garden Street. During follow up investigations of both incidents, Detectives used surveillance video and photos to identify the actor as Aponte and charged him with burglary and theft. After being processed, Aponte was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

3. On August 14, 2023, at approximately 12:45 a.m., Police Officers Shawn Sodora and Kyle Seper responded to the Paramus Police Department to pick up 52- year-old Tammi Brodish of Hoboken, who had an outstanding warrant for defiant trespassing in Hoboken. In January, Brodish refused to leave the Hoboken Public Library, even after being told she was not allowed inside due to breaking rules and causing disturbances in the past. She was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters, processed on the warrant, and remanded to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

4. On August 14, 2023, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Police Officers Anthony Azzoline, Brandon Fitzgibbons, and Damien Bates responded to the area of Third and Washington Streets for a report of a shirtless man swinging a belt. Members of the Hoboken EMS and Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded. Officers observed the man in question jogging down Third Street and eventually approached him on the 200 block of Bloomfield Street. When they stopped the man, later identified as 46-year-old Jose Gonzalez-Avila of Union City, he dropped a glass object and threw another object against a wall and proceeded to smash it with his foot. Gonzalez-Avila was handcuffed for the safety of himself, and for the officers. Officers found him to be uncooperative. He refused to provide his personal information and also refused medical attention. It was found he had a bench warrant out of the Hudson County Sheriff's Office. While inside a radio car being transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters, he became irate and kicked the rear passenger window with his feet. No damage was done. He was later transported to the Hudson County Correctional Center.

5. On August 14, 2023, at approximately 5:40 p.m., Police Officers Rose Kanan and Jennifer Lee responded to ShopRite, 900 Madison St., for a report of shoplifting. They met with the in-store loss prevention employee who told them he stopped the actor, later identified as 42-year-old Evelyn Diaz of Weehawken, after she exited the store without paying for items which totaled $287.78. After reviewing surveillance footage, officers placed Diaz under arrest. She was processed, released on a summons, and given a court date.

6. On August 16, 2023, at approximately 1 a.m., Police Officers Brandon Fitzgibbons and Remy Garcia-Marte were driving on Hudson Street when they observed a man walking in the middle of the road attempting to open the doors of parked cars. The officers stopped the man, later identified as 41-year-old Tajron Edwards of Jersey City, on the 1100 block of Hudson Street. Sgt. Robert Roman arrived on the scene to assist. Edwards was placed under arrest for attempted burglary. It was discovered he also had a summons from Jersey City for trespassing into a motor vehicle. He was taken to Hoboken Police Headquarters, processed, and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

7. On August 16, 2023, at approximately 5:20 a.m., Jersey City Police Officers brought 33-year-old Amir Wilson of Jersey City to Hoboken Police Headquarters. Police Officers Andrias Bonilla and Jason Montalvo took custody of Wilson who had a warrant out of Hoboken for simple assault and wandering to obtain or sell CDS. He was processed and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

8. On August 16, 2023, at approximately 5:05 p.m., while on patrol near the area of Harrison Street and Paterson Avenue, Sgt. William Collins and Detective Fabian Quinones observed two men face each other and exchange something. After exiting their vehicle, the officers approached the men and observed a wax fold in the hands of 57-year-old Edgardo Baez of Paterson, who was placed under arrest. The other man, later identified as 33-year-old Christopher Peselli of Hoboken, took a glass cylinder pipe from his pocket, and threw it to the ground. He was then also placed under arrest. Both Baez and Peselli were transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters, processed, charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, and released.

9. On August 17, 2023, at approximately 12:25 a.m., Police Officers Daniel Grossi and Andrias Bonilla were in the area of Newark and Washington Streets when the observed a man yelling and pacing back and forth and then walking a few blocks. Because he appeared agitated and in need of assistance, the Officers approached the man, later identified as 27-year-old Peter James of Jersey City, near the intersection of Second and Bloomfield Streets. James was unable to provide officers with any information other than his first name and date of birth. When asked if he had anything in his pocket, James took out a glass cylindrical pipe with a brown residue suspected to be CDS. That is when he was placed in handcuffs and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters where he was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released with a summons.

10. On August 17, 2023, Police Officers Remy Garcia-Marte and Anthony Rutkowski processed the arrest of 41-year-old Alice Pickett of Jersey City who was brought to Hoboken Police Headquarters by NJ Transit Police Officers. Pickett was wanted on a warrant in Hoboken for shoplifting and refusal to be fingerprinted. She was processed and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
