Niche.com recently released its 2024 K-12 (Kindergarten through 12th grade) school rankings. They includes five schools in Secaucus:
- Clarendon Elementary School (Secaucus School District)
- Huber Street Elementary School (Secaucus School District)
- Secaucus Middle School (Secaucus School District)
- Secaucus High School (Secaucus School District)
- High Tech High School (Hudson County School District)
All five Secaucus schools rank higher than the majority of schools in New Jersey. High Tech High School impressively ranks in the top 6th percentile among New Jersey public high schools while Secaucus High School places in the top 37th percentile. As for Secaucus Middle School, it ranks in the top 29th percentile among NJ public middle schools. And among NJ public elementary schools, Huber Street School and Clarendon School rank in the top 26th and 32nd percentiles respectively.
In addition to just rankings, Niche also grades each school among different categories. For their overall grades, all five Secaucus schools did well earning a grade of "B+" or higher. The top scorer is High Tech High school at a grade of "A+". Right behind that are Secaucus High School and Huber Street School both with a grade of "A-". Rounding out the pack are Clarendon School and Secaucus Middle School with a grade of "B+".
Although these rankings and grades are generally positive, Secaucus schools' proficiency scores are a different story. The math proficiency scores for the four Secaucus School District schools are all less than 30%. This means that more than 70% of those students scored below proficiency levels on state math assessment tests. Even for High Tech High School, which ranks higher than the other four schools, the math proficiency score is only at 49%. So the majority of students there scored below proficiency levels as well. Fortunately, the reading proficiency scores for the five schools are much higher, but they also need improvement. High Tech's comes in at 79%, and the other four schools' scores are all around 50%. GIven that all kids should be proficient in both math and English, all of these scores should be much closer to 100%.
As Secaucus' population continues to grow, it is hard to predict the direction of its schools. According to these findings from Niche, the kids in Secaucus are currently in good hands. However, as many know, there is an ongoing teacher shortage. So as older teachers retire, it may become more and more difficult to find quality teachers to replace them. Therefore, many parents may have to become more involved to ensure the success of our kids, especially in an increasingly competitive world.
