East Orange, NJ, November 30, 2023: Mayor Ted R. Green will be hosting Part III of his Men’s Conversation Series, which is designed to provide opportunities for men and young people to engage in meaningful dialogue and actions centered around brotherhood and service in the East Orange community.
Open to everyone, the event will be held on December 2, 2023 between 9am-11am at the Bowser Family Senior Center, 90 Halsted Street, East Orange, NJ. It will feature special guest speaker Shalil Canzater, an East Orange native and author of “Purposely Mis-Educated,” which Canzater describes as a doctrine for escaping mediocrity.
Canzater’s book title is reminiscent to Dr. Carter G. Woodson’s 1933 book, “Miseducation of the Negro,” in which the noted historian explains how the educational system had been “brainwashing” black people into accepting themselves as inferior and subordinate to other races.
“The term “mis-education” was appropriate then, and in 2023, it is just as relevant,” said Mayor Green. “Many of our young people are at risk of falling through the cracks of an educational system that, at one time, was intent on erasing the history and significant impact of Black people in America. We are fighting against generational cycles of trauma, violence and stress as a result of this cultural indoctrination,” said Mayor Green. “For this third installment of the Men’s Conversation Series, we will focus on the topics of brotherhood and resiliency as tools to overcome challenges and beat the odds against success. When we come together like this, we create an intentional space for men and boys to connect, and together, identify strategies to improve their lives and the lives of those around them.”
