On Friday, June 9, 2023, members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit arrested a 14-year-old Jersey City male in connection with the fatal shooting of Tyshawn Smith.
The 14-year-old is charged as a juvenile with Aggravated Manslaughter in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11:4a(1), Possession of a Weapon in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1), and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1). He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus. Juvenile matters are confidential and no additional information can be released at this time.
On Monday, June 5, 2023, at approximately 4:20 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department received a 911 call reporting a shooting at 124 Wilkinson Avenue. Responding officers located an injured male – later identified as Tyshawn Smith, 15, of Jersey City – with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at approximately 4:55 a.m. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the Cause of Death to be a Gunshot Wound to the Abdomen and the Manner to be Homicide.
The above charges are merely accusations and the juvenile is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6)
