The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit has arrested a 26-year-old man after a gas station employee died as a result of injuries he sustained during an assault in Jersey City in 2022.
Nixon Marquez, of Jersey City, is charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3a, a crime of the first degree. He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.
On Sunday, August 21, 2022, at approximately 2:48 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department responded to the Shell gas station on the corner of Marin Boulevard and 14th Street on reports of an assault. Responding officers located a male victim – later identified as Fardin Ghadamidarounkola, 55, of Jersey City – with a serious head injury. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment. On Monday, May 15, 2023, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office was notified Ghadamidarounkola died at a Washington, D.C. hospital on Saturday, May 13, 2023. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the Cause of Death to be Complications Due to Blunt Force Trauma to the Head and the Manner of Death to be Homicide.
Marquez was previously charged with assault and weapons offenses relating to this matter. Charges were upgraded following the report by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6)
