NYPD Officer Charged With Offenses Under the Domestic Violence Act

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announces that Hariton Marachilian was arrested on December 1, 2023, in relation to an investigation into a domestic violence incident that took place in Paterson, NJ on December 10, 2022. Mr. Hariton Marachilian is currently employed by the New York Police Department. He is charged with First Degree Kidnapping, two counts of Second-Degree Aggravated Assault, Third Degree Criminal Restraint and Third Degree Criminal Coercion.

Based on an investigation Mr. Hariton Marachilian was identified as the actor who kidnapped and assaulted a female victim causing her to sustain serious injuries. The victim will remain unidentified pursuant to the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act.

The sentencing exposure for Mr. Hariton Marachilian on First Degree Kidnapping is 15-30 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of the term to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act and 5 years of parole supervision upon release; as to the Second Degree Aggravated Assault, the exposure is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of the term to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act for each charge, as to the Third Degree Criminal Restraint and Criminal Coercion the exposure is 3-5 years New Jersey State Prison for each charge.

Mr. Hariton Marachilian will be seen at Central Judicial Processing Court (CJP) on December 7, 2023. The State has filed a motion for pretrial detention in this matter and that will be heard on December 12, 2023, before a Superior Court Judge.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
