Rogelio Gonzalez
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-InCharge Isa Abbassi announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police
Department, in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Rogelio Gonzalez, 30-
years old from Paterson, was arrested on October 30, 2023, in connection to the homicide that
took place on January 23, 2023, in the area of Berkshire and Chamberlain Avenue in Paterson.
Rogelio Gonzalez is charged with Murder, first degree; Attempted Murder, first degree;
Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose, second degree; and Unlawful Possession of a
Handgun, second degree.
At approximately 8:50 p.m. on January 23, 2023, Paterson Police Department patrol units were
dispatched to the area of Berkshire and Chamberlain Avenue in Paterson on a report of shots
fired. As officers canvassed the area, they received information that a victim of a shooting
arrived at Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in a private vehicle. The victim, later
identified as Marvin Lavezarri, 26-years old from Paterson, sustained a gunshot to his buttocks.
On January 25, 2023, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
During the course of the investigation, detectives learned the victim was with two other
individuals when a car pulled up and opened fire on them. The two individuals were not struck
by gunfire. As the investigation progressed, detectives learned that Rogelio Gonzalez was the
shooter.
Rogelio Gonzalez currently awaits his first appearance at Central Judicial Processing. The State
will file a motion for pretrial detention against Mr. Gonzalez which will be heard by a Superior
Court judge at a date and time to be determined by the court.
The crime of Murder has a sentencing range from a minimum of 30 years up to life
imprisonment; the crime of Attempted Murder has a sentencing range of 10 to 20 years in prison;
the crimes of Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose, and Unlawful Possession of a
Handgun each have a sentencing range of 5 to 10 years in prison.
A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, the defendant is
presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
