Jaleel State
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police
Department, in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Jaleel State, 29-years
old from Paterson, was charged on October 24, 2023 in connection to the fatal shooting which
occurred on October 12, 2023 in the area of Summer Street and Hamilton Avenue in the City of
Paterson. Mr. Jaleel State was charged with Murder, first degree, Unlawful Possession of a
Weapon, second degree, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, second degree,
Certain Persons Not to Possess a Weapon, second degree, and Unlawful Possession of a
Weapon, first degree.
On October 12, 2023, at approximately 1:16 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of
Summer Street and Hamilton Avenue in Paterson on a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers
located the victim, Adalberto Roman, 47-years-old from Paterson, with a gunshot wound to the
head. He was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.
Mr. State is currently in custody at the Bergen County Jail awaiting his first appearance at
Central Judicial Processing. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office will file a motion for pretrial detention which will be heard by a Superior Court Judge at a date and time to be determined
by the Court.
The crime of Murder has a sentencing range from a minimum of 30 years up to Life
imprisonment; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon has a sentencing range of 5 to 10 years in
prison; Possession of Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose has a sentencing range of 5 to 10 years;
Certain Persons Not to Have a Weapon has a sentencing range of 5 to 10 years; and Unlawful
Possession of a Weapon in the First Degree has a sentence range of 10 to 20 years in prison.
Criminal complaints are merely accusations. Despite these accusations, the defendant is
presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
