Aurora Villacorta
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police
Department, Aurora Villacorta, 51-years-old from Paterson, was arrested in relation to a stabbing
investigation that took place on October 11, 2023, in the area of Carroll Street and Godwin
Avenue in Paterson, New Jersey. Aurra Villacorta is charged with Aggravated Assault, Second
Degree; Aggravated Assault, Third Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Fourth Degree;
Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Third Degree; and Endangering the Welfare
of a Child, Second Degree.
On October 11, 2023, at approximately 4:10 p.m., members of the Paterson Police
Department responded to the area of Carroll Street and Godwin Avenue in Paterson on a report
of a stabbing. Upon arrival, police located a 5-year-old female child who had sustained multiple
stab wounds. Based on the investigation, police determined that Aurora Villacorta, the child’s
grandmother, had stabbed the victim, and she was placed under arrest.
The sentencing exposure on Second Degree Aggravated Assault is 5 to 10 years in New
Jersey State Prison with 85 percent to be served before parole ineligibility, pursuant to the No
Early Release Act (“NERA”) and five years parole supervision after release; on Third Degree
Aggravated Assault it is 3 to 5 years in New Jersey State Prison; on Fourth Degree Unlawful
Possession of a Weapon it is up to 18 months in New Jersey State Prison; on Third Degree
Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose it is 3 to 5 years in New Jersey State Prison;
and on Second Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child it is 5 to 10 years in New Jersey State
Prison.
Aurora Villacorta is scheduled to appear for Central Judicial Processing on October 12,
2023.
A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite the accusation, defendants are
presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, in a court of law.
