Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department, Bryan Canales-Arias, 29 years old from Paterson, and Ernesto Canales-Arias, 23 years old from Paterson, were arrested on September 25, 2023, in connection with a stabbing incident that took place on September 25, 2023, in the area of Main Street and Market Street in Paterson, New Jersey.
Both Mr. Bryan Canales-Arias and Mr. Ernesto Canales-Arias are charged with: Attempted Murder, First Degree, Aggravated Assault, Second Degree, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Third Degree and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Fourth Degree.
At approximately 1:25 a.m. on September 25, 2023, members of the Paterson Police Department were dispatched to the area of Main Street and Market Street in Paterson, New Jersey, in response to a report of a stabbing. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim, a 50-year-old male Paterson resident who suffered several non-fatal stab wounds. The victim was transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey for treatment.
The subsequent investigation revealed that both Mr. Bryan Canales-Arias and Mr. Ernesto Canales-Arias were responsible for the stabbing. Both Mr. Bryan Canales-Arias and Mr. Ernesto Canales-Arias were arrested on September 25, 2023, in the vicinity of the stabbing by the Paterson Police Department.
The sentencing exposure for both Mr. Bryan Canales-Arias and Mr. Ernesto Canales-Arias on First Degree Attempted Murder is 10-20 years in New Jersey State Prison, of which 85% must be served before parole eligibility subject to the New Early Release act; on Second Degree Aggravated Assault it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison of which 85% must be served before parole eligibility subject to the New Early Release act; Third Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose it is 3-5 years New Jersey State Prison; and on Fourth Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon it is 18 months in New Jersey State Prison.
The State intends to file a motion for pretrial detention for both Mr. Bryan Canales-Arias and Mr. Ernesto Canales-Arias, which will be heard by a Superior Court Judge.
Criminal complaints are merely an accusation. Despite these accusations, defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. More information will be released once it becomes available.
