Jamilette Huaranga
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Haledon Chief of Police Angelo J. Daniele
announce that based on an investigation by the Haledon Police Department, in conjunction with
the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Investigations Unit, Jamilette Huaranga, 21-years
old from Haledon was arrested in connection to the homicide that took place on July 19, 2023, in
the area of Lee Avenue and Legion Place in Haledon, New Jersey.
Jamilette Huaranga is charged with Murder, first degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon,
fourth degree; and Possession of a Weapon For an Unlawful Purpose, third degree.
On July 19, 2023, at approximately 11:45 a.m., members of the Haledon Police Department
responded to a residence in the area of Lee Avenue and Legion Place in Haledon, New Jersey on
a report of man stabbed. The victim, A.L., a 19-year-old male from Haledon, was transported to
Saint Jospeh’s University Medical Center where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.
The subsequent investigation revealed that Jamilette Huaranga was involved in a dispute with
A.L. and stabbed A.L. with a knife. She was then seen by witnesses outside her home in bloodied
clothing.
The crime of Murder has a sentencing range from a minimum of 30 years up to life
imprisonment; the crime of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon has a maximum sentence of
eighteen months in State Prison; the crime of Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose
has a sentencing range of 5 to 10 years in State Prison.
Jamilette Huaranga is scheduled to appear at Central Judicial Processing on July 20, 2023. The
State has filed a motion for pretrial detention in this matter that will be heard by a Superior Court
Judge.
A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, defendants are presumed
innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
