Yoel Maldonado-Nunez
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department, in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Yoel MaldonadoNunez, 31-years-old from Butler, New Jersey, was arrested in relation to a shooting investigation that took place on June 25, 2023, in the area of Market Street and Madison Street in Paterson, New Jersey. Yoel Maldonado-Nunez is charged with Attempted Murder, First Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Second Degree; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Second Degree; and Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons, Second Degree.
At approximately 6:16 a.m. on June 25, 2023, members of the Paterson Police Department were advised that a 23-year-old male Paterson resident had arrived at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey, seeking treatment for a non-fatal gunshot wound. Based on the investigation, police determined that the victim had been shot in the area of Market Street and Madison Street in Paterson, New Jersey.
Through the course of the investigation, Paterson Police identified Yoel Maldonado-Nunez as the shooter. An arrest warrant was issued for Yoel Maldonado-Nunez, who turned himself into the Paterson Police Department on July 11, 2023, at approximately 1:45 p.m.
The sentencing exposure for Yoel Maldonado-Nunez on First Degree Attempted Murder is 10-20 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of the term to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act and 5 years parole supervision; on Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of 42 months before parole eligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; on Second Degree Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 42 months of parole ineligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; and on Second Degree Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 5 years of parole ineligibility.
The State intends to file a motion for the pretrial detention of Yoel Maldonado-Nunez, which will be heard by a Superior Court Judge.
A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
