Arrest Made In Connection With Shooting In the Area of North 9th and Belmont Ave

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department, Linwood Bugg, 27-years-old from Paterson, New Jersey, was arrested in relation to a shooting investigation that took place on June 9, 2023, in the area of 9th Street and Belmont Avenue in Paterson, New Jersey. Linwood Bugg is charged with Attempted Murder First Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon Second Degree; Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose Second Degree; and certain persons not to possess a weapon.

At approximately 10:01 p.m. on June 9, 2023, Paterson Police responded to the area of North 9th Street and Belmont Avenue in the City of Paterson on report of a shooting. Police located a possible crime scene consisting of ballistic evidence but no victim was located. A short while later, police responded to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey on report of a 29 year-old male Paterson, New Jersey resident seeking treatment for a non- fatal gunshot wound.

Linwood Bugg was later charged with Attempted Murder First Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon Second Degree; Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose Second Degree; and Certain Persons Not to Possess a Weapon. Linwood Bugg was arrested by members of the Paterson Police Department in the area of Lafayette Street and Summer Street in the City of Paterson on June 23, 2023 at approximately 9:22 p.m.

The sentencing exposure for Linwood Bugg on First Degree Attempted Murder is 10-20 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of the term to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act and 5 years parole supervision; on Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of 42 months before parole eligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; on Second Degree Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 42 months of parole ineligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; on Certain Persons Not to Possess a Weapon it is it is 5- 10 years New Jersey State Prison with 60 months of parole ineligibility pursuant to the Graves Act.

Linwood Bugg appeared at Central Judicial Processing (CJP) Court on June 24, 2023. The state filed a motion for pre-trial detention that will be heard by a Superior Court Judge Joseph Portelli on June 28, 2023.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. More information will be released once it becomes available.
