Arrest Made In Connection With February 23 Shooting Investigation

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Jaquan Wilson, 21-years-old from Paterson, New Jersey, was arrested in relation to a shooting investigation that took place February 23, 2023, in the area of East 24th Street and 9th Avenue in Paterson, New Jersey. Jaquan Wilson is charged with Attempted Murder First Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon Second Degree; and Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose Second Degree.

At approximately 12:29 a.m. on February 23rd, 2023, members of the Paterson Police Department responded to the area of 9th Avenue and East 24th Street on a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, police located a potential crime scene and an 18-year-old male Saddle Brook, New Jersey resident who sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound. The victim was immediately transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey for treatment.

Based on the investigation, Jaquan Wilson was charged with Attempted Murder First Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon Second Degree; and Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose Second Degree. Mr. Wilson was apprehended by members of the Paterson Police Department in the area of Broadway and Church Street in the City of Paterson, New Jersey on June 1, 2023 at approximately 2:30 p.m.

The sentencing exposure for Jaquan Wilson on First Degree Attempted Murder is 10-20 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of the term to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act and 5 years parole supervision; on Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of 42 months before parole eligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; and on Second Degree Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 42 months of parole ineligibility pursuant to the Graves Act.

Jaquan Wilson is scheduled to appear at Central Judicial Processing (CJP) Court on June 2, 2023. The state will be filing a motion for pre-trial detention that will be heard by a Superior Court Judge.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
