Robert Carroll
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department, Robert Carroll, 59-years-old from Paterson, New Jersey, was arrested in relation to a shooting investigation that took place on May 16, 2023, in the area of Madison Avenue and 10th Avenue in Paterson, New Jersey. Robert Carroll is charged with Attempted Murder First Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon Second Degree; and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose Second Degree.
At approximately 9:00am on May 16th, 2023, members of the Paterson Police Department were dispatched to the area of Madison Avenue and 10th Avenue in Paterson, New Jersey. Based on the initial investigation there was a verbal altercation between an individual later identified as Robert Carroll and a school security guard where gunfire was exchanged. No individuals were hit by the gunfire.
Robert Carroll was later charged with Attempted Murder First Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon Second Degree; and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose Second Degree. Mr. Carroll was apprehended by members of the Paterson Police Department on May 16, 2023, at approximately 12:37pm, in the intersection of 12th Avenue and Rosa Park Boulevard in Paterson, New Jersey.
The sentencing exposure for Robert Carrol on First Degree Attempted Murder is 10-20 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of the term to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act and 5 years parole supervision; on Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of 42 months before parole eligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; on Second Degree Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 42 months of parole ineligibility pursuant to the Graves Act.
The circumstances surrounding the altercation are still open and remain under investigation.
Robert Carroll is scheduled to appear at Central Judicial Processing (CJP) Court May 18, 2023, at 1:30. The state will be filing a motion for pre-trial detention that will be heard by a Superior Court Judge.
A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
