Arrest Made In Connection With March 10 Shooting Investigation

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department, in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Rashane D. Lewis, 24 years old from Paterson, New Jersey, was arrested in relation to a shooting investigation that took place on March 10, 2023, in the area of 12th Avenue and William Street in Paterson, New Jersey. Mr. Lewis is charged with Attempted Murder, First Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Second Degree; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Second Degree; Terroristic Threats, Third Degree; and Resisting Arrest a Disorderly Persons Offense.

On March 10, 2023, at approximately 9:04 p.m., members of the Paterson Police Department were dispatched to area to the area of 12th Avenue and William Street in Paterson, New Jersey on a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, members of the Paterson Police Department located a potential crime scene and a 20-year-old male Paterson, New Jersey resident suffering from a non-fatal gunshot wound. Aid was immediately rendered to the victim, and he was transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey.

Based upon the investigation, police determined that the victim was in the area of 12th Avenue and William Street in Paterson when he was struck by gunfire. Rashane Lewis was identified as the shooter. Rashane Lewis was apprehended by members of the Paterson Police Department on April 4, 2023, in the area of 12th Avenue and East 22nd Street in Paterson, New Jersey.

The sentencing exposure for Rashane Lewis on First Degree Attempted Murder is 10-20 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of the term to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act and 5 years parole supervision; on Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of 42 months before parole eligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; on Second Degree Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 42 months of parole ineligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; on the Third Degree Terroristic Threats it is 3-5 years New Jersey State Prison; and on the Disorderly Persons Offense of Resisting Arrest it is 6 months in County Jail.

The State has filed motions for the pretrial detention Rashane Lewis which will be heard on April 11, 2023 by the Honorable Joseph A. Portelli, J.S.C.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
