Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrests of RAYMOND SYLVESTER (DOB: 3/14/1968; single; physical therapist) of Bergenfield, NJ and LESHAWNDA NIXON (DOB: 12/27/1990; single; unemployed) of Brooklyn, NY on charges of endangering the welfare of a child and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. The arrests are the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Bergenfield Police Department under the direction of Chief Mustafa Rabboh.

On Monday, January 29, 2024, the Bergenfield Police Department received a 911 call regarding an infant experiencing a medical episode. The child was subsequently transported to an area hospital where further testing revealed that the child had ingested a controlled dangerous substance, namely cocaine. The ensuing investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Bergenfield Police Department revealed that RAYMOND SYLVESTER and LESHAWNDA NIXON endangered the welfare of the child in Bergenfield, NJ on one occasion.

As a result of the investigation, on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, RAYMOND SYLVESTER and LESHAWNDA NIXON were arrested in Hackensack, NJ and each charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4a(2); and third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance, namely cocaine, N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10(a)(1). SYLVESTER and NIXON were remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending their first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ.

Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations, and that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. He would like to thank the Bergenfield Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance in this investigation.
