Pine Brook Resident Arrested for Driving While Intoxicated After Leaving the Scene of an Accident

Posted Wed, Feb 7, 2024, From Fairfield Police
Fairfield (NJ) – The Fairfield Police Department announces the arrest of John Sun, (57), of Pine Brook, NJ for driving while intoxicated on February 6, 2024. On that date at approximately 10:24 pm, police headquarters received a 911 call where the caller stated a white Tesla had driven off the roadway onto the center median before re-entering the roadway and continuing on Route 46 West.

Officers were dispatched to the area and Officer Jayson Sickles observed a vehicle matching this description travelling on Route 46 West. It is alleged that the vehicle was swerving and unable to maintain its lane as the officer closed the distance.

A motor vehicle stop was conducted and Sun was found to be the driver and only occupant in the vehicle. Officer Sickles spoke with Sun and it is alleged that he observed signs and symptoms consistent with someone who is under the influence, which included an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath, slurred speech, and bloodshot, watery eyes. Officer Sickles also allegedly observed fresh damage to the driver’s side of Sun’s vehicle, which would be consistent with it leaving the roadway and driving on the median.

Based on the totality, field sobriety testing was conducted. Sun was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to headquarters for processing. The vehicle was impounded per New Jersey law. It is alleged that while at headquarters, Sun refused to provide samples of his breath, which is required in the State of New Jersey.

Sun was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to breath testing, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, careless driving, reckless driving, and several other motor vehicle offenses.

Sun was later released pending an initial appearance at the Fairfield Municipal Court on February 22, 2024.

(Charges are merely allegations until the defendant is proven guilty or pleads guilty in a court of law).
