February 22, 2023, East Orange, NJ: The City of East Orange is celebrating Black History Month and honoring our roots with local award-winning chefs and recipes of the African Diaspora, paying tribute to the culinary influence of black people in America.
Mayor Ted R. Green, the East Orange City Council and the Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs will be hosting a Food for the Soul Tasting Event on Thursday, Feb. 29 at the Bowser Family Senior Center, 90 Halsted Street, between 4pm-7pm. This free event is open to the public and will feature delicious bites from:
- Darryl Walker of Community Food Bank of NJ (Hillside, NJ)
- Natasha Williams of Tasha's Caribbean and Soul Food Cuisine (East Orange, NJ)
- Rashena Burroughs of Blueberry Juicebar Café and Vegan Grille (Newark, NJ)
- Eddie Cotto, Jr. of ME Casa Restaurant (Jersey Cit, NJ)
- Personal Chef Jesse Jones (Maplewood. NJ)
The city will also be sharing favorite recipes on its social media pages all month long. Residents and friends are encouraged to tag@EOCityHall on Meta with family favorite recipes and use the hashtag #foodforthesoul.
“Just as food nourishes our bodies, it also nourishes our soul. East Orange is truly a melting pot infused with cultures and flavors from around the world, and I cannot think of a better place to showcase African, Caribbean and African American cuisine than in our city,” said Mayor Green.
