Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In- Charge Isa Abbassi announce that a 16-year-old male from Paterson, and a 16-year-old male from Clifton were charged in connection with the September 3, 2023, shooting which occurred in the area of Union Avenue and Jasper Street, Paterson, New Jersey. The juveniles are charged with acts of juvenile delinquency that would constitute the crimes of Attempted Murder, first degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, second degree; and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, second degree, if they were adults.

At approximately 2:40 a.m. on September 3, 2023, members of the Paterson Police Department responded to the area of Union Avenue and Jasper Street on a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, police located a 28-year-old male Elmwood Park resident with an apparent gunshot wound. They were informed of a second victim, a 33-year-old male Paterson resident, who also suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey. Police located a potential crime scene in the area where the victims were located. Police were later advised that a third victim, a 29-year-old male Paterson resident, had arrived at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey via private vehicle seeking treatment for non-fatal gunshot wounds. The subsequent investigation revealed the two juveniles were responsible for the shooting.

A juvenile delinquency complaint is merely an accusation. Despite these accusations, the juveniles are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The matter has been referred to the Passaic County Family Court, Juvenile Part, for further proceedings.
