Jimmy Mercedes
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In- Charge Isa Abbassi announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department Shooting Investigation Unit and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Jimmy Mercedes, 39- year-old from Paterson, New Jersey, was arrested in connection to the homicide investigation which occurred on May 5, 2024 in the area of Broadway and East 24th Street in Paterson, New Jersey.
Jimmy Mercedes is charged with Murder, First Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Second Degree; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Second Degree; and Certain Person not to Possess a Weapon, Second Degree.
At approximately 10:22 a.m. on May 5, 2024, members of the Paterson Police Department were dispatched to the area of Broadway and East 24th Street on report of a shooting. Paterson Police located a 62-year-old male victim from Paterson, New Jersey. The victim, Daryle Robinson, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center for treatment. Mr. Robinson was in the hospital receiving treatment until he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on May 7, 2024.
The subsequent investigation revealed that Jimmy Mercedes was responsible for this incident. On May 10, 2024, at approximately 8 a.m., Mr. Mercedes surrendered himself to the Paterson Police Department.
The crime of Murder, First Degree, has a sentencing range of 30 years to life imprisonment. Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Second Degree, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Second Degree, both have a sentencing range of 5 to 10 years in prison with 42 months to be served before parole eligibility in accordance with the Graves Act. The crime of Certain Person not to Possess a Weapon, Second Degree, has a sentencing range of 5 to 10 years in prison with 5 years to be served before parole eligibility.
The State will be filing a motion for pretrial detention that will be scheduled before a Superior Court Judge. Criminal complaints are merely accusations. Despite these accusations, defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
This investigation remains active and ongoing. More information will be released once it becomes available.
