Passaic County Prosecutors Office Announces Blue Envelope Program

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announces the upcoming launch of the highly regarded Blue Envelope Program in Passaic County.

The Blue Envelope Program’s primary goal is to aid drivers with Autism Spectrum Disorder with document organization and education about what to do during a motor vehicle stop. The Blue Envelope also helps the Police Officer by identifying those with Autism Spectrum Disorder and guide them on how to interact with that individual. The Blue Envelope Program was created to enhance communication between the Police Officer and a Driver with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The Blue Envelope is a resealable and convenient place to keep all driver documents and contains instructions for both the driver and the interacting Police Officer in the event of a stop. The Blue Envelope Program introduces a simple yet effective tool that contains essential information for drivers with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This includes a copy of their driver’s license, vehicle registration, insurance card, and contact card. This program will help bridge the gaps in communication and build empathy in the community.

After June 24, 2024, caregivers or individuals on the Autism Spectrum can pick up a Blue Envelope for use. The envelopes will be available at all police departments in Passaic County and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

For more information, contact Senior Assistant Prosecutor Bulent Can of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office at BCan@passaiccountynj.org or at (973) 881-4819.
