Two Charged in Ongoing Fatal Shooting Investigation

Two men have been charged as part of an ongoing investigation relating to a fatal shooting that occurred in Jersey City on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

Nyzir Wilson and Stephon Murphy, both 23, of Jersey City, are charged with Robbery in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:15-1a(1); Burglary in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:18-2a(1); Possession of a Weapon (Firearm) for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1); Unlawful Possession of Weapon (Firearm) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1); Conspiracy to Commit Robbery in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2a(1)/2C:15-1a(1); and Conspiracy to Commit Burglary in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2a(1)/2C:18-2a(1), a second-degree crime. Wilson is additionally charged with Attempted Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-1a(1)/2C:11-3a(3). Both are being held at the Hudson County Correctional Facility. On Thursday, May 23, 2024, a Judge of the Superior Court granted the State’s Detention Motion against Murphy. Wilson is tentatively scheduled to appear for a Detention Motion on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

Shortly after 12:40 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department received a report of shots fired in the area of Audubon Avenue and College Street. Responding officers located an extensive crime scene. An unresponsive male – later identified as David Jones, 24, of Jersey City – was located at 1 College Street with an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:35 a.m. Nyzir Wilson was located nearby with an apparent gunshot wound to an upper extremity and treated at Jersey City Medical Center.

This matter is actively being investigated by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department.
