On May 16, 2024, at approximately 1:10 a.m., Police Officer Aaron Font observed a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of 12th and Madison Streets. He pulled the car over on the 1200 block of Monroe Street and when he approached the driver, later identified as 27-year-old Nicholas Jachera of Hoboken, he noticed the odor of an alcoholic beverage on Jachera’s breath. His eyes were red and watery. Police Officers Joshua Campoverde and Shawn Sodora arrived on the scene to assist. Police Officer Daniela Simone also arrived to conduct a field sobriety test, after which Jachera was placed under arrest. He was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters and issued summonses for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and failing to stop. As per John’s Law he was released into the custody of a responsible party.
On May 16, 2024, at approximately 2:40 a.m., Police Officers Alexander Miller and Anthony Ingraffia were conducting a systematic sweep of a Hoboken Housing Authority (HHA) building on the 500 block of Marshall Drive due to resident complaints of trespassers hanging out in hallways and stairwells. They found an individual later identified as Jeffery Wheeler on a seventh-floor stairwell. It was determined he was trespassing, and he was issued a complaint for defiant trespassing, escorted out of the building, and released.
On May 16, 2024, around 5:15 p.m., Police arrested 19-year-old Justin Villafane of Hoboken and a juvenile following an investigation into a robbery reported on May 2, 2024. On that date, a caller reported he and a co-worker were approached on the 200 block of Washington Street by two masked individuals who threatened the victims and indicated they had a weapon. Sgt. Ryan Houghton, Detective Sgt. William Collins, Detective Sgt. Russo, and Police Officers Anthony Azzoline, Shyenna Vega, Anthony Hochstadter, Harold Milne, Aaron Font, Shawn Sodora, Tyrone Huggins, and Mark Mooreman responded. A follow up investigation by Detectives Paul Quinn, John Quinones, and Connor Milne and Police Officer Samuel Flores, identified Villafane and the juvenile as the actors in this case. On May 16, Det. Quinones observed both of them on the 500 block of Jackson Street. They were arrested and charged with first degree armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. They were transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters for processing. Villafane was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility. The juvenile was transported to the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center.
On May 17, 2024, at approximately 2:55 a.m., Police Officers Aaron Font and Shawn Sodora responded to CVS, 59 Washington St., on reports of a woman punching herself in the face outside the store. Officers recognized her as 47-yearold Stacy Bulter of Hoboken. Butler was on the ground rolling around and occasionally striking her hands and feet on the pavement. She had a cut on her forehead. The Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps was called. Sgt. James Barbaro arrived to assist. Butler was found to have an open warrant for failure to pay rail service fare and shoplifting. She was arrested. Police Officer Bianca Arroya conducted a search incident to arrest which located a glass cylindrical tube with a burnt end, a broken glass cylindrical tube, and three pieces of steel wool, all commonly used to smoke CDS. Butler was ultimately released with a new court date.
On May 17, 2024, at approximately 10:30 a.m., Police Officers Dylan Archilla and Jennifer Lee responded to ShopRite, 900 Madison St., on reports of a shoplifting. Store security reported they saw the actor, later identified as 66-years-old Shadi Salaam of Brooklyn, place three large bottles of detergent, food items, and personal care items totaling approximately $607.19 into a shopping bag and tried to leave without paying. Salaam, who gave officers a false name at first, was placed under arrest and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters. He was charged with shoplifting and hindering apprehension. He was found to have warrants from Hudson County and New York State. He was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
On May 17, 2024, at approximately 11:55 a.m., Police Officers Jason Montalvo and Jessica Pizanie responded to reports of a man with a knife in the lobby of a building on the 200 block of Jackson Street. Lt. Edmond Drishti, Sgt. Christopher LaBruno, and Police Officers Roberto Cuevas and Mark Grossman also responded. It was learned that the man, later identified as 69-year-old Robert Ryan of Hoboken, had approached a US Postal Worker in the lobby of the building, yelled at him, pulled a knife on him, and threatened to kill him. The postal worker was able to get away and Ryan barricaded himself in his apartment. Hoboken officers spoke with Ryan through the door attempting to get him to surrender and come out of his apartment. The Hudson County Regional SWAT team arrived at approximately 1:15 p.m. to assist. Jersey City Medical Center Mobile Crisis was also called. They entered the apartment at approximately 3:20 p.m. and placed Ryan into custody. He was charged with kidnapping, making terroristic threats, possession of weapons for unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of weapons, simple assault, and certain persons not to have weapons. Ryan was taken to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment before being transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
On May 19, 2024, at approximately 12:35 a.m., Police Officers Aaron Font and Shawn Sodora responded to ShopRite, 900 Madison St., on reports of an argument possibly turning physical. Police Officers Kyle Seper and Nasir Willey were also on the scene attempting to keep the parties separate from each other. One of the people obeyed a loud command to stop. The other person, later identified as 36- year-old Delilah Serrano of Hoboken, refused to stop yelling profanity at officers and refused to provide proper identification. She was arrested and transported to Hoboken Police Department Headquarters where she was charged with obstruction of the administration of the law and disorderly conduct with the use of offensive language. She was given a court date and released on a summons.
On May 19, 2024, at approximately 3:40 a.m., Police Officers Nicholas Protopapadakis and Christopher Soto were patrolling the area of Fourth and Washington Streets when they saw a man they recognized as 23-year-old Tyrese Buckhanon of Hoboken inside Blue Foundry Bank, 334 Washington St. The officers knew of multiple complaints from bank management of non-domiciles sleeping inside the vestibule area and urinating in the interior of the establishment. Buckhanon had already been advised multiple times by Officers Soto and Protopapakakis that he’d be arrested if he was found inside the bank again. They asked Buckhanon to step outside the bank, which he did, and he was arrested for defiant trespassing. He was transported to police headquarters for processing. It was found he had three warrants out of Harrison. He was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
On May 19, 2024, at approximately 4:25 p.m., Sgt. Ryan Houghton and Police Officers Kyle Seper, Andrias Bonilla, Matthew Bonnano, and Shyenna Vega responded to a residential building near the intersection of Third and River Streets on reports of a fight between possible juveniles. Upon arrival, they observed about ten juveniles, many violently shouting into a building toward an individual, identified as 37-year-old Jovanni Sanes of Hoboken. Officers eventually calmed all parties down. Detective Sgt. Anthony Russo, Detective Michael Losurdo, and Police Officer Ramon Estrella arrived on the scene. During an on-site investigation, Sanes began to act out by shouting violently and made a verbal statement threatening law enforcement officers. At that point he was placed under arrest and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters for processing. Two of the juveniles were also taken into protective custody and brought to headquarters where they were eventually picked up by their parents. Sanes was charged with making terroristic threats and disorderly conduct. He was released on a summons.
On May 20, 2024, at approximately 8:25 a.m., Det. Paul Quinn and Police Officers Samuel Flores and Harry Montalvo observed a man they knew as Alexis Rivera on the 300 block of Jackson Street. Rivera was wanted on a warrant in connection to multiple package thefts from a building on the 1000 block of Jefferson Street, which was reported on May 12, 2024. The follow up investigation by Police Officer Chelsea Tambora identified Rivera as the actor in that theft and he was charged with burglary and theft of packages from a residential premise. On May 20, he was placed under arrest, transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters, and processed. He was later transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
On May 20, 2024, at approximately 11:55 a.m., Police Officers Arturo Gonzalez and Frank Francolino responded to the 100 block of Sixth Street on reports of a man threatening construction workers. On-site investigation revealed the actor, later identified as 47-year-old Jose Gonzalez-Avila of Jersey City, grabbed a shovel preventing the workers from doing their job, and threatened to kill the workers for not hiring him. When officers tried to question him, Gonzalez-Avila started walking away. He ignored orders to stop and was arrested. A search incident to arrest located a glass cylinder with steel wool and burn marks on one end, commonly used to smoke CDS. He was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters and charged with obstructing the administration of law and possession of drug paraphernalia. While at headquarters, it was learned that Gonzalez-Avila was also wanted for an incident on May 18, 2024, where he was seen on video causing damage to an HPD patrol car. Detective John Quinones and Police Officers Jesse Castellano, Nick Valerius, Jessica Pizane, and Cynthia Rivera were involved in that investigation which led to him being additionally charged with criminal mischief and burglary. He was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
On May 20, 2024, at approximately 1 p.m., Sgt. Frank Rosa and Police Officers Jessica Arebalo and Tyrone Huggins responded to Stevens Park, 401 Hudson St., on reports of a man touching himself inappropriately in a children’s play area. When they arrived, witnesses pointed to the actor leaving the park. He was stopped on the 300 block of River Street and was identified as 29-year-old Jabarrie Leslie of South Bronx. Lt. Luke Zeszotarski arrived on the scene. A check for warrants discovered one for full extradition out of Montgomery County, MD. Leslie was charged with being a fugitive from justice and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters for processing. He was later transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
On May 20, 2024, at approximately 3 p.m., Police Officers Rose Kanan and Jason Montalvo processed the arrest of 38-year-old Kyle Vanness of Jersey City who was brought to Hoboken Police Headquarters by New Jersey State Police. Vaness had an outstanding warrant from Hoboken for aggravated assault. He also had a warrant from Jersey City. He was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
On May 21, 2024, at approximately 5 p.m., Police Officers Christopher Barral and Ramon Calderon responded to the 800 block of Monroe Street on reports of a suspicious man inside the building walking up and down the stairs. Upon arrival they saw a man fitting the description speaking with a woman. The man, later identified as 38-year-old Danilo Sanchez of the Bronx, could not answer specific questions being asked by officers. He also provided them with a false identity. Sgt. Frances McCourt arrived on the scene. When Sanchez was told he was being issued a summons for criminal trespassing, he ignored officers and used his cell phone even when told to put it away. He was placed under arrest for obstruction and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters where he was processed. He was charged with criminal trespassing and obstructing the administration of the law. He was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
On May 22, 2024, at approximately 8:50 a.m., Police Officer Jason Montalvo responded to the 700 block of Jackson Street for reports of an unresponsive man on the ground. The Volunteer Hoboken Ambulance Corps also responded. Upon arrival, the officer located a man later identified as 55-year-old Miguel Matamoros of Hoboken, laying on a set of steps in the common area of a plaza, and observed his genitals were exposed. Lt. David Olivera arrived on the scene. Matamoros was placed under arrest for lewdness. He was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters to be processed. He was found to have a warrant out of Union City. He was issued a new court date on that warrant, and later released with a summons.
On May 22, 2024, at approximately 12:15 p.m., Police Officer Tyrone Huggins responded to the area of Newark and Jackson Streets on reports of a vehicle crash. While speaking with the driver of one of the cars, later identified as 57-year-old Kristine Forcillo of Manasquan, he detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from her breath and observed her to have slurred speech and glassy eyes. When asked for her license and proof of insurance, she was unable to do so. Police Officer Harlod Milne arrived on the scene to perform a field sobriety test, which Forcillo refused. She was placed under arrest and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters where she further refused to provide breath samples. She was charged with driving while intoxicated and refusal to submit to breath testing. As per John’s Law, she was released into the custody of a responsible party.
On May 22, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Police Officers Rose Kanan and Jason Montalvo responded to CVS, 59 Washington St., on reports of a disorderly man inside the store. When they arrived, they saw the man, identified as 38-yearold Eugene Ortiz of Manhattan, shouting at an employee and pointing directly into his face. An on-scene investigation revealed that Ortiz had shoplifted several packs of baby wipes and tried to leave the store. Employees grabbed the bag he had placed the wipes in, and escorted Ortiz out of the store. Ortiz was still in possession of two packages of wipes, and as he walked out of the store, he shoved the employee. Ortiz was arrested and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters. He was charged with robbery and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
