Driver Charged in Kearny Hit-and-Run

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit has charged a Newark woman in connection with a hit-and-run collision that seriously injured a pedestrian in Kearny on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Sonia Salazar, 63, is charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.1; Endangering an Injured Victim in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.2a; and Causing Serious Injury While Driving on a Revoked/Suspended License in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:40-22b. She was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus on Thursday, June 6, 2024 and released pending her first court appearance, which is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, June 20, 2024.

Shortly after 7 a.m., on May 30, 2024, the Kearny Police Department was notified of a pedestrian struck at the intersection of Kearny Avenue and Columbia Avenue. Responding officers located a male victim, later identified as a 76-year-old Kearny resident, with serious injuries. The striking vehicle did not remain at the scene. The victim was transported by Emergency Medical Services to University Hospital in Newark for treatment.

The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6)
