Arrest Made in Connection with Attempted Murder and Assault by Auto

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Deputy Chief Joseph Rooney of the Wayne Police Department announce that based upon an investigation by the Wayne Police Department, D’Airon J. James, 31-year-old male from Paterson, New Jersey, was arrested in relation to an assault by motor vehicle investigation that took place on June 14, 2024, in the area of Hamburg Turnpike and Black Oak Ridge Road in Wayne, New Jersey. D’Airon J. James is charged with Attempted Murder First Degree; Aggravated Assault Third Degree; Assault by Auto Fourth Degree; Endangering Another Person Third Degree; Criminal Mischief Third Degree; and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose Third Degree.

At approximately 1:56 a.m. on June 14, 2024, members of the Wayne Police Department were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in the area of Hamburg Turnpike and Black Oak Ridge Road in Wayne, New Jersey. Upon arrival, Wayne police made contact with a potential victim who was identified as a 44-year-old Pompton Lakes resident. In addition, a crime scene was also located.

D’Airon J. James was apprehended by members of the Wayne Police Department on June 14, 2024, at approximately 1:56 a.m., at the scene of the motor vehicle accident at Hamburg Turnpike and Black Oak Ridge Road in Wayne, New Jersey

The sentencing exposure for D’Airon J. James on First Degree Attempted Murder is 10-20 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of the term to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act and 5 years parole supervision; on third degree Aggravated Assault it is 3-5 years New Jersey State Prison; on fourth degree Assault it is 18 months New Jersey State Prison; on third degree Endangering Another Person it is 3-5 years New Jersey State Prison; on third degree Criminal Mischief it is 3-5 years New Jersey State Prison; and third degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose it is 3-5 years New Jersey State Prison.

The State filed a motion for pretrial detention for D’Airon J. James. The Honorable Joy-Michele Johnson granted the State’s request for detention on July 31, 2024.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
