The family of John Amos and the City of East Orange will host a Memorial Celebration honoring the life and legacy of native son John Amos, the trailblazing actor affectionately known as “America’s Father.”

Amos passed away on August 21, 2024, in Los Angeles at the age of 84.

The event will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 4 p.m. in the Jean L. James Theater at the Cicely L. Tyson Community School of Performing and Fine Arts, 35 Winans Street, the site of Amos’ alma mater, East Orange High School.

Hosted by AJ Calloway, the memorial will include select speakers, musical performances, and a special video tribute.

Born in Newark and raised in East Orange, Amos’ journey from this small suburb to iconic roles in Good Times, Roots, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The West Wing, and Coming to America is one of perseverance, family, and service.

A star athlete in East Orange High School's Class of 1958, Amos stayed connected with his hometown, attending games and supporting the East Orange-Barringer “Old Guard” tradition.

Beyond the screen, Amos was a passionate humanitarian, advocating for children with disabilities and joining Nelson Mandela in the fight against apartheid.

"This tribute honors not only his achievements as an actor and athlete but also his commitment to family, his hometown, and the causes he championed," said his daughter Shannon Amos.

“John Amos was authentically East Orange, and we are proud to honor one of our own,” said Mayor Ted R. Green. “His legacy spans generations and will continue to inspire for years to come.”

This event is open to the public. Seating is limited. To RSVP, please visit: A Celebration of Life and Legacy: Honoring John Amos Tickets, Sat, Nov 23, 2024 at 4:00 PM | Eventbrite
