Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of 35-year-old JEVON M. BRYANT of Teaneck, NJ on charges stemming from a fatal hit-and-run motor vehicle accident. The arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck and the Teaneck Police Department under the direction of Chief Andrew McGurr.

As previously reported, on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at approximately 6:59 p.m., the Teaneck Police Department responded to several 911 calls reporting a pedestrian lying in the roadway. Upon arrival, officers determined that the pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle, which left the scene of the collision. The pedestrian was subsequently identified as 70-year-old Bernardita Garcia of Englewood, N.J. She was transported from the scene to Holy Name Hospital where she was ultimately pronounced deceased. Accordingly, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit responded to the scene and a joint investigation was initiated.

During the investigation, detectives determined that a white Honda Accord struck the victim as she was attempting to cross Cedar Lane, near the intersection with Lincoln Place. On Saturday, December 7, 2024, the vehicle in question was located and JEVON M. BRYANT was identified as the driver of the Honda at the time of the collision.

As a result of the investigation, on Saturday, December 7, 2024, JEVON M. BRYANT was charged with second-degree knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, N.J.S.A. 2C:11-5.1; third-degree endangering an injured victim, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-2.1a; fourth-degree obstruction of justice, N.J.S.A. 2C:29-1a; as well as related motor vehicle offenses. BRYANT was transported to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.

Prosecutor Musella would like to thank the Teaneck Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation, along with the Paramus and Wyckoff Police Departments, which both participate in the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Task Force.
