Hoboken Police Arrest Blotter: December 12, 2024 to December 18, 2024

1. On December 12, 2024, at approximately 10:05 p.m., Police Officers Marvin DeJesus and Alyssa Rivera responded to ShopRite, 900 Madison St., on reports of a shoplifting in which store security had detained the actor, identified as 44-year-old Lee Samson of New York. Samson was seen placing a number of items into a shopping cart but only scanned and paid for some of the items before attempting to leave. He was stopped by a security officer with approximately $241.68 in unpaid for items. Samson was placed under arrest for shoplifting and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters for processing. He was released with a summons.

2. On December 13, 2024, at approximately 12:15 a.m., Police Officers Ronald Kibitlewski and Nasir Willey were on the 100 block of Marshal Street when they saw a man they knew was 38- year-old Eugene Ortiz of Jersey City who was wanted in connection to a recent package theft. It was confirmed there was a warrant open for his arrest on charges of theft of a package delivered to a residential property on the 600 block of Bloomfield Street. That report was taken on December 6, by Christopher Barral who also identified Ortiz as the actor. He was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters where he was processed before being transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

3. On December 13, 2024, at approximately 12:50 p.m., Police Officers Tyrone and Elias Colon responded to the 200 block of Second Street on reports of two people breaking into the basement of a residential building. Police Officer Daniel Barron and Anthony Olivera also responded. Upon arrival, they met with a woman they knew as 47-year-old Shaneka Boatwright of Newark and a man later identified as Taheed Mohammed. Sgt. Jason Falco arrived on the scene. Mohammed was issued a summons for defiant trespassing and released from the scene. Boatwright was found to have warrants for possession out of Hoboken and disorderly conduct out of Kearny. A search incident to arrest located three small baggies containing a white powdery substance believed to be CDS crack cocaine and one clear glass cylinder pipe with burnt tips containing steel wool. Boatwright was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters and further charged with possession of CDS, possession of drug paraphernalia, and defiant trespassing. She was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

4. On December 13, 2024, at approximately 8:55 p.m., Sgt. Frances McCourt and Sgt. Adam Colon were traveling on Madison Street and observed a man trying to open the door of a building on the 50 block of Madison Street, attempting to gain entry. They watched the man enter the building and put packages into his backpack. They recognized the man as 58-year-old Tony Watson of Bayonne and placed him under arrest. Police Officers Martin DeJesus and Jesssica Pizane arrived on the scene to assist. A search incident to arrest located two packages that were addressed to residents of the building he was seen entering and exiting along with a glass cylindrical pipe, a ball of copper mesh, and a folded credit card, believed to be used to open the door. Watson was transported to the Hoboken Police Department and charged with burglary, theft of package from a residential property, possession of burglary tools, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also charged with additional counts of burglary and theft in connection to two November package thefts on the 100 block of Willow Avenue reported on December 4. That report was taken by Police Officer Jessica Pizanie and a follow up investigation by Police Officer Raymond Calderon identified Watson as the actor. He was released on a summons.

5. On December 14, 2024, at approximately 3:15 a.m., Police Officers Anthony Rutkowski and Marvin DeJesus were driving on Washington Street when they saw a car driving at a high rate of speed near Second Street. They then observed the car slow down at a red light but go through before it turned green. At the intersection of Newark and Washington Streets, the vehicle again went through a red light, passing other cars stopped at the light. They pulled the car over on the 100 block of Observer Highway and approached the vehicle where they smelled the strong odor of air freshener, as if someone had just sprayed the entire inside of the vehicle. They asked the driver, later identified as 21-year-old Jaden Reyes of Bayonne, for his paperwork, and he had a hard time finding his driver's license. Officers observed an open bottle of liquor on the floor of the backseat. They observed Reyes’ eyes to be bloodshot and watery. He refused to take a standardized field sobriety test and was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated. He was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters and officers noticed the odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from the rear seat of the patrol car, where Reyes was sitting. At headquarters, Reyes refused to give breath samples. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to observe signal, reckless driving, refusal to submit breath tests, refusal to submit breath samples, improper passing, and open container in a motor vehicle. As per John’s Law he was released into the custody of a responsible party.

6. On December 14, 2024, at approximately 5:30 a.m., Police Officers Nasir Willey and Carmen Benitez were conducting a building sweep of a Hoboken Housing Authority (HHA) building on the 600 block of Sixth Street when they located a man, later identified as 57-year-old Joseph Cooper of Newark, in the stairwell. It was learned he did not live in the building. Sgt. Roary Miller arrived on the scene. It was discovered Cooper had an active warrant from the Hudson County Sheriff's Department and one out of Marion County Sheriff's Department. He was placed under arrest and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters. He was processed on charges of defiant trespassing and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

7. On December 13, 2024, at approximately 6:40 a.m., Police Officers Ronald Kibitlewski and Nasir Willey responded to the corner of Second Street and Willow Avenue on reports of a man sleeping in his car. They located the man, later identified as 43-year-old Joseph Casella of Hoboken, slumped over in the driver's seat. The car was partially in the middle of the street. Officers woke Casella up and observed him to be confused and noticed he was slurring his speech. He struggled to find his paperwork. He was asked to step out of the vehicle and when he did, he was unsteady on his feet. Sgt. Michael Straten and Police Officers Aaron Font and Carmen Benitez responded to the scene. A standardized field sobriety test was conducted, after which Casella was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. He was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters and processed on charges of driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. As per John’s Law, Casella was released into the custody of a responsible party.

8. On December 14, 2024, at approximately 3:20 p.m., Police Officers Andrias Bonilla and Marco Grossmann responded to ShopRite, 900 Madison St., on reports of a shoplifting where store security already had the actor, later identified as 27-year-old Cullen Iwata of Hoboken, in custody. An on-scene investigation revealed Iwata placed items into a reusable bag and tried to leave without paying for approximately $142.92 worth of meat before being stopped by security. He was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters. He was processed on shoplifting charges and released with a summons.

9. On December 14, 2024, at approximately 5 p.m., Police Officers Carmen Benitez and Nasir Willey were on patrol in the Hoboken Housing Authority (HHA). While conducting a building check on the 600 block of Sixth Street, they found a man sitting in a stairwell on the Seventh floor. The man, later identified as 56-year-old Richard Maldonado of Hoboken, was not a resident and issued a summons for defiant trespassing. Sgt. Roary Miller and Police Officers Aaron Font and Valentino Salgado arrived on the scene to assist. Maldonado was escorted out of the building, told he couldn’t trespass there again, and released with a summons.

10. On December 14, 2024, at approximately 9:55 p.m., Police Officers Nasir Willey and Brian Kim were on patrol in the area of Third Street and Park Avenue, when they observed an electric moped committing multiple traffic and motor vehicle related violations. They attempted to pull the bike over using emergency lights, but the driver ignored the officers, despite acknowledging he saw them. The driver eventually stopped on the 100 block of Third Street, when he got stuck in traffic. When the officers approached the driver, later identified as 25-year-old Bryan Rodriguez of Jersey City, he became irritated. It was learned the vehicle was not registered. Sgt. Michael Straten and Police Officers Christopher Soto, Trevor Thomas, Andrias Bonilla, and Michael Chen arrived to assist. Rodriquez continued to act disorderly and yelled profanities at officers as they tried to explain why his bike needed to be registered. He refused to give officers his identity and information. He was placed under arrest and resisted by tensing his arms making it difficult for officers to handcuff him. Rodriquez was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters where he was charged with eluding, obstruction of the administration of the law, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct, and issued summonses for uninsured vehicle, unlicensed driver, failure to stop at a stop sign, and unregistered vehicle. He was released from custody with a summons.

11. On December 15, 2024, at approximately 2:05 a.m., Police Officers Frank Losurdo and Geovanni Cruzado were on patrol when they observed a car pass a handful of stopped vehicles on River Street and make a right turn onto Newark Street. They pulled the vehicle over on the 50 block of Newark Street and approached the vehicle. The driver, later identified as 23-year-old Jshan Harrell of Woodbridge, provided officers with an invalid insurance card. He had glassy eyes and slurred speech. Officers saw two open bottles of liquor inside the car. Police Officer Daniela Simone arrived to conduct a field sobriety test, after which Harrell was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. A search of his car located two half empty bottles of tequila. Harrell was transported to Hoboken Police Department where he was processed on charges of driving while intoxicated, failure to exhibit insurance, reckless driving, and open/unsealed container of alcohol. As per John’s Law, Harrell was released into the custody of a responsible party.

12. On December 15, 2024, at approximately 9:10 a.m., Police Officers Daniel Barron and Shyenna Vega responded to a residential building the 300 block of Harrison Street on reports of a man sleeping in staircases. They located a man, identified as 69-year-old Roberto Ortiz of Hoboken and he was issued a summons for defiant trespassing. He was released with a court date.

13. On December 15, 2024, at approximately 3:25 p.m., Police Officer Nathaniel Arocho responded to the area of Hudson and Third Streets on reports of an off-duty police officer being threatened. An on-scene investigation revealed a man, identified as 32-year-old Steven Avila of Bayonne, failed to stop at a stop sign and almost hit the off-duty officer. Avila then got out of his car and shouted profanities at the officer who remained in his own vehicle. Avila also implied to the officer that he had a weapon in his car. Officer Arocho pulled Avila over nearby and Avila double parked his vehicle, got out, and began to walk away. When he was ultimately stopped, he refused to give his identification and began shouting profanities. Sgt. Tyler Soto arrived on the scene to assist. Avila was told multiple times to stop shouting. He ultimately gave officers his identification. He had two active warrants; one out of Jersey City, and one out of Belmar. Avila was arrested for making terroristic threats. A weapon was not found in the vehicle. Avila was released on bail.

14. On December 16, 2024, at approximately 10:35 a.m., Police Officers Anthony Olivera and Michael Aviles responded to ShopRite, 900 Madison St., on reports of a shoplifter, where store security had the actor in custody. Upon arrival, officers learned the actor, identified as 63-year-old Marwan Kassabdulahad of Fairview, was seen taking two containers of motor oil, four containers of power steering fluid, and a bagel. He then tried to leave without paying, before security stopped him. Kassabdulahad was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters for processing for shoplifting and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

15. On December 17, 2024, at approximately 12:45 a.m., Police Officers John Rodriguez and Shyenna Vega were conducting a check of a Hoboken Housing Authority (HHA) building on the 600 block of Sixth Street when they observed a man, later identified as 27-year-old Jose Venura Umana of Guttenberg, unconscious in the seventh-floor stairwell. Officers eventually woke him up and it was determined he did not live in the HHA. He was arrested for defiant trespassing and ultimately released from custody with a summons.

16. On December 17, 2024, at approximately 7:50 a.m., Police Officers Mark Mooreman and Daniela Simone responded to the 300 block of Harrison Street on reports of an individual experiencing homelessness in a stairwell. They found 69-year-old Roberto Ortiz on the fifth floor and recognized him as someone who had been told multiple times that he couldn’t sleep in the building, which is on Hoboken Housing Authority (HHA) property, since he didn’t live there. He was transported to the Hoboken Police Department and processed on charges of defiant trespassing. He was released on a summons.

17. On December 17, 2024, at approximately 4:50 p.m., Police Officers Matthew Bonanno and John Lawton saw a car fail to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Fourth and Monroe Streets. They pulled the car over, and the driver, later identified as 58-year-old Michael Carbone of Jersey City, didn’t have a driver's license with him. Sgt. Harold Milne arrived on scene. It was discovered Carbone had multiple warrants for his arrest. A search incident to arrest located four wax folds containing a powdery white substance suspected to be CDS heroin and a straw with an unknown white substance. He was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters and processed on warrants from Mountainside and Jersey City. He was further charged with possession of CDS heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also issued a motor vehicle violation for failing to stop at a stop sign. He was released on bail.

18. On December 17, 2024, at approximately 2:50 a.m., Police Officer Anthony Rutkowski was on patrol near the intersection of 11th and Hudson Streets when he saw a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed. The car slowed down but then went through a red light. The officer pulled the car over on the 1000 block of Sinatra Drive. He approached the driver, later identified as 34- year-old Jihad Donaldson of Passaic, who had a hard time providing proper documents. The officer also detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath, as well as an odor of burnt marijuana coming from the inside of the vehicle. Donaldson’s eyes were bloodshot, and his eyelids were droopy. A field sobriety test was conducted, after which Donaldson was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Police Officers Nicholas Losurdo and Jiaro DeLaCruz arrived on scene to assist. Officers located one open bottle of Hennessey and one open bottle of tequila on the floor of the back seat. He was transported to the Hoboken Police Department and charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, failure to observe a signal, and having an open alcoholic beverage container. As per John’s Law, Donaldson was released into the custody of a responsible party.

19. On December 18, 2024, at approximately 7:20 p.m., Sgt. Roary Miller and Police Officers Shyenna Vega and Remy Garcia-Marte responded to Ben & Jerry’s, 405 Washington St., on reports of a man refusing to leave. Officers located the man, later identified as 75-year-old Richard Renta of Saddle Brook, and an on-scene investigation revealed he had been harassing employees for the last couple of days. It was discovered he had active warrants from Hoboken for harassment, from Bergen County for manufacturing, distributing, or dispensing CDS, from Newark for defiant trespassing, and from Elmwood Park for driving without a license. He was ultimately transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility. 20. On December 18, 2024, at approximately 8:15 p.m., Police Officers Alyssa Rivera and Roberto Cuevas responded to ShopRite, 900 Madison St., on reports of a shoplifting where store security had the actor in custody. An on-scene investigation revealed the actor, identified as 33- year-old Amanda Carballo of Union City, was seen placing several items on top of a bag filled with hair products. She then tried to leave after paying for everything but the hair products, before store security stopped her. She was arrested for shoplifting and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters.
