Man Charged in Jersey City Hit-and-Run Involving a Teenager

On Monday, March 10, 2025, members of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit arrested the driver involved in a hit-and-run collision that seriously injured a motorcyclist in Jersey City on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Nicholas Ortiz, 38, of Jersey City, is charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.1; Endangering an Injured Victim in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.2; and Tampering with Physical Evidence in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:28-6(1). He was arrested in the area of Jersey Avenue and Aetna Street in Jersey City and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on September 21, 2024, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a collision involving a motorcycle and a sedan in the area of Broadway and Wright Avenue. Responding officers located the motorcycle operator, a 14-year-old juvenile male, with a serious injury to a lower extremity. The sedan involved, later identified as a Lexus IS operated by Ortiz, did not remain at the scene. The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
