Arson Task Force Investigating Fatal Fire in Jersey City

The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department are investigating a fatal fire that occurred on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.

Shortly after 3 p.m., the Jersey City Fire Department was notified of a fire at 289 Van Nostrand Avenue. Upon arrival, first responders found fire within a second floor unit. During suppression activities, firefighters located an injured male – later identified as Terrance Culbreath, 53, of Jersey City – in the kitchen of the unit. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead just after 4 p.m.

This matter remains under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department. Foul play is not suspected at this time.
